Today marks the 126th birthday of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) one of the 20th century’s most influential architects and thinkers. The German-born architect is famous for his reductive tendencies in design, often subscribing to the principles of “less is more” and “God is in the details.” A few of his most notable projects include his textbook archetype of minimalism – the Farnsworth House, in Plano, Illinous – and various other furniture innovations, such as the Barcelona chair, which where placed in many of his buildings. His legacy lives on through these and many other works of art, and his teachings helped to create an educational style that has manifested itself as the School of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
