The 2012 London Olympics are right around the corner, and this right here is the first of 4 structures designed to house the games. The Olympic Velodrome, designed by Hopkins Architects, is supposed to mimic the efficiency and functionality of a bicycle, with roof skylights that allow natural light to enter the structure, and external perforations in the timber walls to allow natural ventilation and cooling during the day. Designed to reflect the geometry of the cycling track on the inside, the steel roof also collects rainwater, which is then reused and recycled throughout the facility. All of these details add up to create a unique architectural experience, and the self-proclaimed “World’s Fastest Race Track.” Check out some pictures below:
